Orange et Moi App

Bringing the Livebox into Orange’s main app.

Orange et Moi is the app Orange customers use for their mobile and internet services. Orange was retiring its separate Livebox app and moving every box feature into Orange et Moi. I was the product designer on the parental controls: seeing every device on the home Wi-Fi, and cutting or scheduling its connection from the phone. Research, interface design, prototyping, user testing and handoff, with the iOS and Android teams.

Product designer, parental controls

iOS and Android, Livebox 6

The problem

A router works with MAC addresses and rules. A parent thinks in terms of a child’s phone and a bedtime. The old Livebox app showed the network the way the router sees it, and parental controls were rarely used.

Moving the feature into Orange et Moi was the occasion to rebuild it around the parent, within what the Livebox 6 firmware could do.

What I did

The device map. The entry point is the list of devices connected to the Wi-Fi, with names a parent recognises: the Switch, the desktop, a specific phone. Each device opens its own controls.

Two controls per device. Allow or block the connection now, and schedule disconnections: time windows, days of the week, several windows per device. Cutting access tonight or setting a school-week rule happens on the same screen.

Device list and controls

Designed within the firmware. The Livebox 6 was still in pre-release, and the controls had to ship with it. With the iOS and Android developers, I tracked what the new firmware would allow — which rules the box could enforce, how it applied them — and designed to that, so the app never offered a control the hardware couldn’t deliver.

Tested with parents. User tests with parents in the target group, then iterations on naming, the scheduling flow and what the app shows while the box applies a rule.

The landing page

Orange et Moi is where customers manage contracts, bills and the box, but that value was hard to see from the outside. I redesigned the download page to show what the app does for the customer, including the new Livebox features.

Downloads increased after the release.

Outcome

The Livebox controls shipped inside Orange et Moi for the Livebox 6 launch, on iOS and Android. A parent can see who’s connected and cut or schedule a device in a few taps, without a technical term. The interface also stays honest about the delay between setting a rule and the box applying it.
